Reasons to be short or over when dealing with a cash register?
I'm hoping to get a job within a fast food place soon. I would love to work front line which deals with cash. I know how to count back cash quickly....although keep in mind I've never worked a register. My fear is counting the drawer and coming up short or over. What are some reasons for this happening? I want to be on edge and prepared for when I end up getting a job.
The short answer: Not counting cash properly. Chances are your employer will not care if a customer tells you to keep the change, and your drawer is $0.02 over. They'll surely care if you're $200 short, though.
If you're unsure about cash, count it again. Don't become careless just because you see a line of people waiting. At the same time, make sure you work with a sense of urgency so the line waiting knows that you value their time waiting.
In the end, your employer should be able to tell you their expectations with cash differences. For some a single, large difference will result in termination. But chances are you won't deal with huge amounts of cash to count in a single transaction in a fast food environment, so don't stress.
