Make an effort to take in all the things you normally ignore around the rooms like the lights, cupboard doors or even the cushions. These things don't cost much money but can change the feel of the whole room for the better when they're updated. If you do have the cash you could try hanging wall paper in a few rooms to add a more friendly feel rather than paint to inject life into any room. Try not to go overkill, deep dramatic colours might sound great in theory but when the cold dark winter rolls around a deep red room is going to look even darker.
